About Us

Mission

The Roosevelt Sustainability Committee, aka the Planeteers, is committed to building community-minded environmental stewardship amongst our students, parents and staff. 

Some of our green initiatives at Roosevelt include:

• Healthy and accessible green spaces, such as our gardens and outdoor classroom

• Native and drought-tolerant plants

• Community demonstration garden with BWP (upcoming Centennial Garden)

• Bike bus

• Bike rodeos (skills and safety clinics)

• Sustainability education

• Family-friendly garden days

• Collaboration with PTA, DEI and Arts Committees (e.g. Festivals, Family Engagement Nights, etc.)

• Collaboration with teachers and students (e.g. supporting raised bed boxes for classes, etc)

• Waste sorting program

• Air quality monitors

• Reducing urban heat island effect through shade structures and strategic vegetation

• Halloween costume swap 

• Lost & Found support

• Reusable meal-ware for school events

• Reusable classroom party decorations (e.g. Halloween, Valentine's Day, etc.)

• and more!

Through its efforts, Roosevelt has won the prestigious California Green Ribbon Award twice in a row (2024, 2025), and the Bike Bus program has been awarded a certificate of recognition by Burbank City Council (2026). 

The Sustainability Committee works closely with the Roosevelt PTA, Principal Osmond, teachers and operational staff, School Site Council, and Burbank Water and Power. But at the end of the day, we are just a group of passionate volunteers who are part of a grassroots movement dedicated to environmental innovation and student wellness. We want children to be conscious and responsible citizens for themselves, their community, and their future. 

Governance

The Roosevelt Sustainability Committee, colloquially also known as the Planeteers, is part of the Roosevelt PTA. The chair of the Sustainability Committee holds a position on the PTA executive board, alongside other committees such as D.E.I and Arts.

Theodore Roosevelt Elementary PTA is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Federal Tax ID: 95-6220940 

The Roosevelt Sustainability Committee's annual budget is approved and disbursed by the PTA.

Reimbursement Process

Items purchased for Sustainability programs may be reimbursed with prior approval and copy of receipts. Request for Reimbursement forms can be found in the school office, or downloaded here. Turn completed form and receipts into the PTA Treasurer's mailbox, also in the school office.
